REACT – REsilience and Adaptive CapaciTy in agriculture

Axis 1Research, technological development and innovation
Action 1.1.4Support for projects developed by aggregations of enterprises
DESCRIPTIONThe REACT - REsilience and Adaptive CapaciTy in agriculture project intends to create an innovative system which, thanks to the collection and smart exploitation of data from multiple sources, improves the efficiency of agricultural practices and makes them more sustainable. A platform consisting of a territorial information system capable of collecting, coherently organising and processing a huge amount of heterogeneous data and then returning the output clearly to stakeholders (farmers, agricultural, reclamation and irrigation associations, etc.) will be developed to achieve this. The platform will contain all the information collected and will have a modular architecture, in which the various modules will use data mining techniques to extract information from the data. The platform will be compatible with tools such as decision support systems (DSS) for irrigation, for the use of fertilisers or phytosanitary treatments: the range of possible modules compatible with the platform is practically endless. This represents one of the strengths and innovations of the platform, as a flexible tool that can be easily applied to numerous applications.

RADROAD – RADarmeteo smart ROAD system

Axis 1Research, technological development and innovation
Action 1.1.1Support for enterprises carrying out research projects which require the employment of researchers (PhD and master’s graduates with technical-scientific profiles) by said enterprises.
DESCRIPTIONThe “RADROAD - RADarmeteo smart ROAD system” project is a smart mobility project that intends to create a smart system at the service of the public, to provide support when adverse weather conditions cause inconvenience or danger to road traffic. The system, based on the smart city concept, will use the network of sensors installed across the country as a source of data. This data will then be used to provide real-time warnings and as input for forecasting models to trigger alerts. The development of specific algorithms for the high-resolution forecasting of short-term weather conditions is planned. Particular attention will be focused on potentially hazardous weather phenomena, such as heavy rainfall, severe winds or frost (weather alert system). Real-time forecasting models will be implemented to estimate the hydrogeological risk (overflowing of water bodies near roads, flooding of subways, landslides) in risk areas (flood and landslide warning system for smart cities). All this will converge into the RADROAD public alert system, a smart system for solving specific urban mobility problems. For example, one of the RADROAD project’s services will be the calculation of the safest route, taking into consideration the problems caused by weather/hydrogeological emergencies, in order to avoid potentially hazardous traffic congestion. RADROAD also intends to develop a notification system that uses the information produced by weather and flood forecasting systems not only to report possible damages and hazards nearby, but also to advise people on how to stay safe (notification system development). The system will be compatible and interconnected with other smart city applications, interacting with the interconnected infrastructure of the city of the future.

BODI – BOllettino fitosanitario Digitale / Digital phytosanitary report

ProgrammeProgramma di Sviluppo Rurale (PSR) (Rural Development Programme) for the Veneto Region 2014-2020
Measures16.1 Support in setting up and managing EIP’s operational groups in the field of agricultural productivity and sustainability 16.2 Support for pilot projects and the development of new products, practices, processes and technologies
DESCRIPTIONCreation of an innovative tool for vine-growers which, within the scope of a common strategy, ensures that phytosanitary treatments are always justified on a technical-scientific basis, rather than by the arbitrary decision of the entrepreneur, which, even if correct, is not backed by objective evidence, as envisaged by European directive 2009/128/EC. This directive implements a framework of common action for the sustainable use of pesticides, by creating the compulsory Integrated Pest Management programme. These goals can be achieved by taking a series of existing tools, reviewing them and using them together to create a powerful new Decision Support System (DSS) along with a system for monitoring the agricultural meteorology conditions of the territory. This will provide a foundation for efficient, effective phytosanitary treatments that cannot be opposed because, besides full complying with the legislation in force, they will always be justified by technical-scientific evidence. The resulting Digital Report (BoDi) will be a detailed, precise document tailored to the needs of each individual business, bringing benefits of an economic (lower costs and better image) and environmental (lower chemical input) nature.

WATCH Decision support system for sustainable WATer management in agriculture under Climate cHange

Axis 1Research, technological development and innovation
Action 1.1.1Support for enterprises carrying out research projects which require the employment of researchers (PhD and master’s graduates with technical-scientific profiles) by said enterprises.
DESCRIPTIONWATCH intends to create a decision support system for the sustainable management of water resources in agriculture. The study of satellite-based remote sensing technologies and methods and the analysis of the potential of IOT systems distributed throughout the territory, together with the new meteorological skills acquired in issues, have led to the development of a consistent database capable of feeding artificial intelligence algorithms. More specifically, this has led to the development of neural networks (ANN) for forecasting irrigation parameters, in order to optimise water resource management strategies. The algorithms developed can be used in decision support systems (DSS), in order to allow the rationalisation of water resources not only on the basis of the rainfall measured and forecast, but also in relation to the effects of the crop strategies adopted. The aim is to achieve significant energy savings while increasing crop resilience to climate change, this being a key feature of Radarmeteo.

RESA: Remote Sensing for Agriculture

Axis 1Research, technological development and innovation
Action 1.1.1Support for enterprises carrying out research projects which require the employment of researchers (PhD and master’s graduates with technical-scientific profiles) by said enterprises.
DESCRIPTIONRESA consists of an agricultural support system to optimise agricultural production. A system capable of incorporating weather data into agricultural meteorology models and automatically estimating the uncertainties in the output of the models has been developed. The results are presented in a user-friendly interface, which becomes an innovative agricultural decision support system (DSS). RESA will improve the production system by minimising phytosanitary treatments, the use of water resources and agricultural equipment, and by rationalising the human resources employed in agriculture, minimising activities that have limited added value. RESA is part of the agri-food chain, as an innovation of the primary production system, addressing climate change issues by sustainably using natural resources and reducing the use of fossil fuels. Through the use of ICT technology, it enables the development of an advanced agricultural production system that is resilient to climate change. RESA encourages the optimal use of natural resources and promotes the virtuous integration between the reduced environmental impact in terms of pollutants and the professionalisation of precision agriculture. RESA develops the interconnection between distributed sensing and remote sensing, combined with agricultural meteorology models in web platforms capable of monitoring the indicators necessary to supporting agricultural decisions.

W.I.S.E. – Wastewater Integrated System Enhancement

Axis 5Interregional industrial research and experimental development projects
Action 5.1.1Interregional cooperation
DESCRIPTIONThe WISE project intends to develop strategies for the integrated management of the wastewater system and to introduce decision support tools to assist with its planning and operation. The aim is to implement local management and global integrated control of wastewater systems. The contribution of input to the decision support system can be strengthened and made much more reliable by using a low-cost system to directly measure precipitation and combining it with radar measurements for real-time weather monitoring and next-generation meteorology modelling. This will also improve the validation of alarms triggered by the individual measuring techniques. The analysis and study of different advanced mathematical decision support systems and their implementation in the wastewater network models developed, coupled with real-time weather inputs, will make it possible to obtain weighted comparisons aimed at assessing the precision of the different methods. The system will be optimised both in terms of performance and cost thanks to specific simulations, in order to maximise its efficiency, accuracy and economic viability. Databases will also be generated for the development of analyses aimed at estimating critical events for wastewater infrastructures; the system created can be used to support the design of new wastewater networks.
