Open and accessible weather data for everyone
Climate change, destined to profoundly impact everyone’s life, plays a central role in shaping the qualitative framework of society. In this context, Radarmeteo embraces a vision of open meteorology, interpreting the term as Karl Popper defined it: openness as transparency, sharing, and dialogue.
Meteorological data should be open and free, accessible to everyone: the cultural, economic, and research sectors, as well as citizens. Public meteorological services are also expected to perform effective monitoring, ensuring efficiency, maintenance, updates, and network quality.
These systems are considered to belong to all citizens, who contribute with diverse skills and perspectives to enhance their value.
Quaderni di Meteorologia Aperta® were created to welcome technical and experiential contributions, not necessarily scientific, from those who share these principles. They also aim to include voices beyond meteorology, to listen, understand, engage, and expand opportunities for interaction.
All our models, constructions, and analyses are fundamentally based on observational data.
But do we truly understand these data? How reliable are they? Where do they come from?
This is a crucial issue, which the text addresses in a highly pragmatic way, grounded in the Italian context.
Reanalysis is the new frontier of meteorology. It is also the tool that interacts with all new digital applications, thus opening meteorological data to a wide range of users and disciplines.
